PP vs PE for Injection Molding and How to Select Right Masterbatch

PP (Polypropylene) and PE (Polyethylene) are two of the most widely used general-purpose plastics for injection molding. They share many similarities in processing and application, but their physical properties, heat resistance, toughness and surface performance are different. Choosing the right resin is the first step to qualified finished products, while selecting a matched color masterbatch is important in stable coloring, production efficiency and final product quality.

Key Differences Between PP and PE for Injection Molding

PP
PE
PP features excellent heat resistance. Its continuous service temperature can reach 100°C to 120°C, and it is safe for microwave heating. It will not deform or soften under common high-temperature conditions.
PE, including HDPE, LDPE and LLDPE, has poor heat resistance. The maximum long-term service temperature is around 60°C. It is prone to softening and deformation when exposed to high heat, and is never suitable for microwave use.
PP is rigid and stiff with good structural stability. When bent or tapped, it makes a crisp sound. It maintains good shape retention after injection molding.
HDPE is tough and flexible, while LDPE is softer and more elastic. PE products feel waxy to the touch and produce a dull sound when folded. They have outstanding low-temperature resistance and will not become brittle even at minus tens of degrees Celsius.
The standard processing temperature of PP for injection ranges from 200°C to 280°C, which is relatively high.
PE runs at a lower processing temperature, generally between 160°C and 230°C. This difference is critical for the heat resistance requirement of color masterbatch.
Common PP products present a semi-matte surface; transparent PP can achieve high clarity. Due to higher melt viscosity, PP is more likely to generate color specks, streaks and uneven coloring if the pigment dispersibility is poor.
PE has better melt fluidity. Pigments disperse more easily in PE resin, so it is less likely to produce visual defects. However, soft-grade PE products have a higher risk of additive and pigment precipitation.

How to Select the Right Color Masterbatch for PP and PE

The carrier resin of color masterbatch determines its compatibility with base plastic.

PP masterbatch must use PP carrier, and PE masterbatch must use PE carrier. Mixing different carrier masterbatches will lead to poor dispersion, color spots, peeling and unstable production. Follow the below rules for selection:

Color Masterbatch for PP Injection Products

Select PP carrier masterbatch as the priority, which achieves perfect compatibility with PP resin.
Since PP is processed at high temperature, choose masterbatch with good thermal stability and high-temperature resistant pigments, to avoid fading, yellowing or carbonization during long-time high-temperature production.
For products with strict appearance requirements such as transparent PP tableware and high-gloss shells, pick masterbatch with superior dispersion to eliminate color specks and flow marks.
For food-contact PP products, use food-grade masterbatch that complies with safety standards.

Color Masterbatch for PE Injection Products

Adopt PE carrier masterbatch to ensure full fusion with HDPE/LDPE raw materials.
For soft PE products and thin-wall parts, choose masterbatch with low precipitation and low blooming, to prevent sticky surface and pigment migration.
For outdoor PE products exposed to sunlight for a long time, select UV-stabilized masterbatch to resist aging and color fading.
For recycled PE materials, use high-dispersion masterbatch to improve the overall coloring effect of mixed materials.
