Moisture Absorbing Desiccant Masterbatch for Recycled PE PP Processing

Desiccant masterbatch, also known as anti foam and moisture absorbing masterbatch, it is a widely used functional additive specially developed to eliminate residual moisture during plastic melt processing. It is the most cost effective solution for manufacturers working with recycled PE, PP and mixed plastic scraps, which carry high moisture content from collection, washing and storage. Unlike traditional hot air or vacuum pre-drying, desiccant masterrbatch can be directly blended with raw materials without extra drying equipment, greatly simplifying production and cutting energy costs.
Composition of Desiccant Masterbatch
- Active Desiccant Agent (Calcium Oxide, CaO): 75%~85%
- Carrier Resin: 12%–22%
- LDPE, LLDPE, HDPE or PP resin are mainly used. Film grade desiccant masterbatch uses low melt index PE carrier for even mixing with recycled film scraps; injection grade products adopt high flow PP carrier to guarantee smooth melt fluidity during injection molding. The carrier ensures the masterbatch disperses evenly in recycled raw materials without agglomeration.
- Compound Auxiliaries: 3%~5%
- Includes dispersing wax, thermal stabilizer and lubricants. Dispersants prevent calcium oxide powder from clumping and eliminate screw slipping during extrusion. Thermal stabilizers protect the formula from decomposition under 160~230°C production temperature, while lubricants improve processing smoothness and reduce equipment wear.

Application and Advantage of Desiccant Masterbatch
- Recycled plastics absorb moisture during washing, stacking and rainy season storage. When heated to melting point, unremoved water vaporizes instantly to form tiny steam bubbles. CaO in masterbatch captures all free water before vaporization, permanently locking moisture inside the melt to eliminate bubble sources fundamentally.
- Desiccant masterbatch erases common flaws including silver streaks, pinholes, cloudy haze, surface cracks and hollow voids on finished plastic products, greatly improves surface smoothness and transparency for film packaging and injection parts.
- Excess moisture causes unstable melt pressure, screw surging, frequent screen blockage and uneven product wall thickness. Desiccant masterbatch keeps melt viscosity consistent, reduces machine shutdown frequency, and lifts continuous production efficiency.
- High temperature steam triggers polymer hydrolysis, breaking long plastic molecular chains and weakening tensile strength, impact resistance and flexibility.
